I’ve been obsessed with painting flowers for a long time
specifically aging, decaying, dying flowers.
Talking with a friend recently, I recollected the origin of this. Beginning at age 20 I was a physical therapy aide working with people who have cerebral palsy. I assisted them hands-on with range of motion and other exercises. It was tender, fun, sweet and meaningful work. Mary the physical therapist always had flowers on her desk, and she always let them transform through their entire expression: from bright, vibrant, lush, to dry and muted, mangled, molding and falling apart - they were still beautiful, just different.
I think I've always painted Mary’s flowers.
